Hi friends! After the colorful festival of Holi,
spring is bringing to us another festival of great importance - Ugadi. It is a South-Indian event, celebrated mainly in the Deccan peninsula. It is also celebrated in Maharashtra by the name of
Gudi Padwa.
Color of spring brings life after the dull drudgery of winter; so many cultures designate
spring as new year. Ugadi is also a new year for the people of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Ritual include having an oil bath in the morning and reciting prayers, followed by e six-course meal. People gather together and listen to the recitation of the religious almanac about the coming year. Social functions are held where people are rewarded for excellence, sometimes accompanied by Carnatic music programs.
